Microchipping is once again in the news. Regardless of the arguments for and agaisn't compulsory microchipping, because all veterinary clinics, pounds and SPCA's now have microchip readers we can certainly reccomend microchipping as an excellent way of identifying your animal should it get lost. Microchipping has been widely used overseas for this purpose for the last 10 years and we can now offer this service in New Zealand. It costs $70 to microchip your pet which includes lifetime registration on the Australasian database. This allows you to change your address and contact details via a website should you move. The price drops to $56 if the microchipping is dona at the time of vaccination. Microchipping just for council requirements (without registration on the australasian database) is $50 (or $40 at the time of vaccination). The process is as simple as being given an injection. We use a needle similar to the type you would donate blood through and the chip is deposited just under the skin between the shoulder blades where it can be read by the microchip reader.
